A Story, True.

The Keeper of the Heart

When she was small, she used to talk to the shadows. Not the frightening kind the soft ones that gathered in warm corners, near dusty windows, under quiet beds. One of them listened.

He was small, stooped, and thin as a sapling, with pointy ears and bare feet wrapped in moss. His bald head gleamed under moonlight, and his only possession was a wooden pencil etched with curling runes that seemed to hum with secrets. He never told her his name, but he kept something for her: a small, glowing heart.

“I’ll guard it until you’re ready,” he whispered one night, placing it gently in a hollow of light and leaf. “But you must promise to return for it.”

Years passed, as they do. The girl grew tall, then tired. She forgot the sound of the moss and the kindness of the fireflies. The world filled with noise deadlines, disappointment, dim rooms. She no longer spoke to the shadows. She forgot the feeling of being kept safe.

Until one night worn thin and aching from a grief she couldn’t name, she wandered into a dream. A forest, just as she remembered it. Twilight. Quiet.

He sat there as if he’d never moved. Older, perhaps, but ageless in the way certain spirits are. In one hand: the glowing heart. In the other: the old pencil, worn to a nub but still carved with shimmering lines.

She knelt beside him, tears catching in her throat.

“Thank you for keeping me safe,” she whispered.

“Are you still there?”

His smile was small, like a secret kept just for her.

“I never left,” he said. “I’ve been sitting in the space between your heartbeats, waiting for you to remember you are still whole.”

“But I lost so much,” she said. “I don’t feel like the girl who believed in magic anymore.”

He nodded. “That’s why I waited. Not for you to return to her but to remember that even your forgetting was part of becoming.”

She looked down at the glowing heart.

“Is it mine?”

“It always was,” he said. “I only held it so you wouldn’t have to hide it.”

She reached out, and he placed the heart in her hands. It felt warm not like fire, but like memory. Like safety. Like beginnings.

As she held it, he touched her hand with his bony fingers.

“You’ll forget again,” he said softly. “That’s alright. Just promise to come back, now and then. Whisper into the stillness. I’ll hear you.”

And then he faded not vanished, not gone. Just… folded back into the forest. Into the silence

. Into the part of her that always remembered, even when she forgot.

That night, when she woke, the world was just as loud but her heart was a little quieter.

And somewhere deep inside, she knew:

He was still there.
